Europa Donna head Stella Kyriacidou of DISY, who met with new House President Marios Karoyian yesterday morning, explained the new resolution offered specific guidelines on how to prevent breast caner.
“It provides, in other words, the creation of a public Breast Cancer Centre, where specialised teams will treat sufferers,” she said, adding that the centre would deal with precaution all the way up to therapy.
“Unfortunately, we haven’t got breast cancer centres in the public sector yet. This is a problem for us. There are options in the private sector, but this is of little help to financially vulnerable women,” she said.
Although there are no official figures yet, Kyriacidou said there were an estimated 500 new breast cancer cases in 2007. “The figures speak for themselves; we are in urgent need of this centre,” she said. “The youngest sufferer is 25 years old; this is an illness that affects young women too, so we need to adopt this EU resolution as soon as possible.”
According to Kyriacidou, there is a specific injection breast cancer sufferers need every month that stops their menstruation, which costs €200 and hasn’t been put up for tenders by the government; this means patients have to cough up the money themselves as it is not something they can do without.
“We have suggested women buy the injection and keep the receipts until the state has imported the medicine, so they can get refunds.”
Meeting with Karoyian was the first in a series of meetings Europa Donna has planned in order to pave the way for the centre’s creation. The association has already planned meetings with the Finance Minister, other related associations and fellow MPs.
“We are aiming to have the centre up and running by October, which includes International Breast Cancer Day,” Kyriacidou pointed out.
